Glossary
Order — (German order, French ordre, Latin ordo, ordin – range, structure) in classical architecture the order of the ratio of bearing and supported parts of a building: columns and entablature, including architrave, frieze and cornice. The architecture of ancient Greece formed the order of different styles: Doric, Ionic, Corinthian. The Romans added the Tuscan and Composite. In architectural practice since antiquity and especially in the following centuries various orders have freely combined with each other, their proportions and details have varied and changed. Order system is the basis of facades and interiors of the monuments of the Classicism and Baroque. |
